russell davies: widgety goodness 1 - intro and desire

This, of course, runs counter to the conventional online advertising dream that when everyone's empowered with perfect information and sharing everything with their community then all the branding con-artists will be out of a job. Or more likely they'll be lined up against the SuperWall and shot, just after the PR people and Andrew Keen. But I'm think that's one of those techno-utopian singularities that won't come to pass. There's this notion that attaching imagery, ideas and stories to a product is somehow a trick and that once we're all sufficiently melded with our technology we'll awaken from our idiocy and only buy things based on the material cost of goods. Or something. Anyway. I don't think we live in that rational a world. People like buying things that embody ideas wrapped around a physical product, and that they'll pay extra for that. And that that's fun and good.

Which is, you know, sort of interesting, but not really helpful. Because that just gets you to the cliche sci-fi visions of Minority Report etc and I don't think the future's going to be like that. It makes movie sense but not marketing sense. And I don't think society will tolerate it, and I don't think decent brands are that stupid.Well, half of me doesn't think so, and half of me suspects we're going to end up with Blade Runner directed by the people who brought you Orangina and Cillit Bang.

Shakuhachi Tips Wiki | Tips / Jo Ha Kyu

Jo-ha-kyu is the essential form in all traditional Japanese temporal arts. From a quiet beginning (jo) we proceed to a more complex middle section (ha) and then on to a fast conclusion (kyu) followed by a final brief stasis. The great Noh creator and theorist Zeami likened jo-ha-kyu to a small stream that becomes a river then ends as a waterfall crashing, finally, into a still pond.

Cuando defines wireframes para algo que tendrá cierta interacción social, suele ocurrir que tus propuestas son lanzadas considerando a un montón de usuarios, todos participando activamente, con sus perfiles completos, etc. La actividad que se refleja en tus propuestas es frenética. Pero no defines para el “usuario 0″, ese que llega de los primeros (seguramente colega), cuando apenas hay movimiento y sólo quiere “probar a ver qué tal”

Dunning–Kruger effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which "people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it".[1] The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their own ability as above average, much higher than in actuality; by contrast the highly skilled underrate their abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. This leads to a perverse result where less competent people will rate their own ability higher than more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may weaken self-confidence because competent individuals falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. "Thus, the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others."[1]

In 1995, McArthur Wheeler walked into two Pittsburgh banks and robbed them in broad daylight, with no visible attempt at disguise. He was arrested later that night, less than an hour after videotapes of him taken from surveillance cameras were broadcast on the 11 o'clock news. When police later showed him the surveillance tapes, Mr. Wheeler stared in incredulity. “But I wore the juice,” he mumbled. Apparently, Mr. Wheeler was under the impression that rubbing one's face with lemon juice rendered it invisible to videotape cameras (Fuocco, 1996).

“A travelling IRC bot troupe”, y el hombre que pudo pensar esa frase

Hay un momento en el Miracleman de Alan Moore, en el que el Dr. Gargunza, genio del mal, dice algo así como “afortunadamente, no me llaman genio por la forma en que me cepillo los dientes”. Hoy me he puesto a buscar un proyecto de _why, y al reencontrarlo, y releer la descripción, he recordado vivamente por qué le considero un genio:

   handful of irc connections
   to produce the illusion
   of a performing set of
   sentient ircbots.

   the trick to this script
   is that the bots aren't
   fully scripted, so you
   can jump in at moments
   and add improvisational
   dialogue to startling
   effect.

Ayer escribí “A monkey can code. Show me the thought.” porque me pareció gracioso y sin pensarlo demasiado, pero se adecua perfectamente a este caso. A medida que el código y las plataformas de desarrollo se “commoditizan” más y el “view source” se implanta definitivamente, la inspiración individual, el recombinar piezas en formas que no se han pensado antes, en definitiva, la creación artística a través del software, tanto como producto en si mismo como fuente de inspiración para los demás, es el factor más distintivo de la obra realmente relevante. Y la de _why lo ha sido a niveles inconmensurables.

Gráficas y prensa online

Las gráficas de la prensa online son una de esas cosas que, sobre todo si eres diseñador, molan tela. Por lo general solían ser ejercicios de representación de información muy bien ejecutados en los que podías interactuar con los elementos para seleccionar la porción de la información que realmente te interesa y a menudo, enterarte mucho mejor de algo tan soberanamente aburrido como las estadísticas.

Se lleva la palma el New York Times, con ejemplos sencillos pero impecablemente ejecutados en los que navegar por muestras de información enormes es fácil e intuitivo y la interacción con el gráfico impecable.

Digo que “solían ser”, porque de un tiempo a esta parte lo que eran ejercicios de simplicidad, se está convirtiendo en el colmo del mal gusto, la ornamentación absurda y la falta de claridad.

Así, desde salidas de la crisis representadas con carreras de caballos, hasta piezas sobre el cambio climático absurdamente ilegibles, las gráficas se han convertido en reclamos visuales más que en información real, y es una pena. Sobre todo cuando se pretende mostrar algo que es fácilmente representable con apenas unas líneas y rectángulos de color.

Nunca está de más, hablando de esto, revisarse la épica charla (o cualquier otra) de Hans Rosling en las TED Talks en el 2006. O incluso remontarse a unos siglos atrás.
